The Havurah program at Congregation Beth Am is a great way to get to know others and to build lasting friendships with synagogue members. What Is A Havurah? A Havurah is a group of 10 - 12 couples or families or up to 20 individuals who get together monthly to celebrate Jewish life in an "extended family setting". The Havurah experience is for people who are seeking a smaller scale Jewish community and are willing to give of themselves and work towards building this unique communal bond. Havurah groups are for singles, married, families with young or teenage children, and "empty nesters". What Is The Advantage Of A Havurah? Getting to know people in a larger congregation can be intimidating for some. A Havurah is a terrific way to become acquainted with others who are in your age range, live near you and have similar interests. Some of Beth Am's Havurot have been together for many years. What Kinds Of Things Does A Havurah Do? Each Havurah determines its own programs based on its own needs. One Havurah might enjoy a Shabbat dinner, have a Hanukah party, or build a Sukkah, while another goes camping or on a retreat. One group may invite a speaker to raise and answer questions on a chosen topic while another may be planning a special mitzvot project. Whatever you and your fellow haverim (friends) decide to be a meaningful program, that is what you will do. Beth Am's Director of Programming is always available to offer programming ideas. How Do I Join A Havurah? When you join the synagogue you are given a Havurah application form. Anyone interested is "matched up" with others who have similar qualifications. As soon as a sufficient number of applications from people with your specific interests is received, the Director of Programming will notify you of the first orientation at which time you will meet your group members.
