JLC - Hebrew Curriculum
JLC Judaic Curriculum
Notes on the curriculum: The topics of the calendar, holiday cycle, Shabbat, tefillah (prayers), and Israel, are studied in age-appropriate instruction for each grade level, in addition to the subjects listed below. Each class attends a weekly music session. Classes in grades 2-6 attend tefillah (prayers) or tefillah study each session. Each class leads a Friday night service, and grades 4-6 additionally lead a Shabbat morning service. A family education program is also held for each grade, with monthly TNTs for Kita Zayin. Our Hebrew curriculum emphasizes the love of the language of the Jewish people, primarily through siddur-based study, with some inclusion of Biblical and modern Hebrew. YELADIM (Preschool: 3 and 4 years of age) Children tour the synagogue and are introduced to the basics of Jewish holidays. Preschool level puzzles, stories, and activities enhance the learning. The class joins Gan and Alef for their music program.
KITA GAN (Kindergarten) Students are introduced to the synagogue and the holiday cycle, retelling the holiday story and describing specific rituals and values. The class is enriched through stories, games, art and music.
KITA ALEF (First Grade) Basic Jewish concepts, as well as the Jewish holidays and Shabbat, are explored on a primary level. Key objects, rituals, and vocabulary for holidays and synagogue are introduced. Students receive a parent-decorated Torah at their class service.
KITA BET ( Second Grade) This year, students are consecrated to their Jewish and Hebrew studies through a Kabbalat Siddur service, and they receive a daily siddur. They begin attending JLC twice a week and join the upper school in Tefillah. Students are introduced to the stories of our Torah, emphasizing the meaning in cultural context, as well as the relevance to children today. Students receive a parent-decorated daily siddur at their class service.
KITA GIMMEL (Third Grade) This year, the students engage in a thorough examination of the Jewish calendar and Holy Days, through a Melton-prepared curriculum. Lessons from the Prophets and Writings are studied emphasizing meaning in cultural context and relevance to children today.
KITA DALED (Fourth Grade) Topics of in-depth study include the synagogue, tzedakah/gemilut hasadim, and kashrut. A highlight of this class is a study of individual family histories, culminating in a Family History Museum.
KITA HAY (Fifth Grade) Jewish ethics and questions of morality are confronted in this class. Concepts relating to the people and land of Israel are another focus of this grade, with students preparing individual reports to share with class.
KITA VAV (Sixth Grade) Parashat HaShavuah is a major focus in Kita Vav. Biographies of Jewish people in history are studied to enable students to derive a sense of Jewish values applicable in their own lives. Responsibility to one's self and our people are stressed. Mondays There are three components to this program. The Jewish life cycle is highlighted, with a focus on Bar/Bat Mitzvah. “Topics in Jewish History,” covers post-Biblical to pre-Israel subjects. The third segment is “What is Talmud?”
KITA ZAYIN (Seventh Grade) The Judaic curriculum for this year introduces students to Jewish American history in the context of the total Jewish timeline. Students also will have discussions on God, how to preserve our heritage, how to combat anti-semitism, how to help our fellow human beings, how to assist the poor and how to face Judaism's challenges.
