8 Days of Giving

Times have been tough, so let's spread a little joy! Since we cannot celebrate Hanukkah together in our traditional way this year, let’s use the 8 days of Hanukkah to help others.  We have chosen 8 programs in San Diego that do an enormous amount of good and our goal is to have the Beth Am Community help these amazing programs support those in need.  Help us give “8 days of gifts” to these different programs in San Diego County.  Starting December 1st and through to the last day of Hanukkah (December 18th) our members can drop off gifts for the “8 Days of Giving.”  (Although we are using the “8 days of Hanukkah” for our “8 Days of Giving” we are actually giving you 18 days to stop by and drop off your donations.)

Please read about the programs below and the type of donations they need.  You may donate items to all 8 charities or just one or two.  You may bring all of your donations on one day, or stop by on different days with donations for different charities - it's all up to you. We want to make Beth Am’s “8 Days of Giving” convenient, meaningful, and memorable for you and your family.  2020 is a year we will never forget, let Beth Am’s 8 Days of Giving be a positive memory to end the year.

All you have to do is drop your donation’s off at the synagogue and we’ll take care of the rest.

We will have donation bins located in 3 different areas on our campus:

  • Main Gate
  • ECC Gate
  • JLC-Main Office Gate

Drop offs can be made throughout the day. Just leave your donations with your name in the bins and we will do the rest. We thank you in advance.

Day 1

1 Can, 2 Cans, Who Can? You Can!

Benefiting Jewish Family Service's Hands Up Food Pantry Program.

The Jewish Family Service's Hands Up Food Pantry is committed to fighting hunger. The Hands Up Food Pantry is there to make sure that everyone in San Diego is food secure, regardless of race, age, or religion. Let us help them. Please donate non-perishable food items to help stock their shelves with plenty of healthy choices.

Day 2

Send A Hanukkah Hug

Benefiting seniors living in Seacrest Village Retirement Community.

During these past few months many seniors are feeling isolated due to COVID. Their families cannot visit, and they have been living alone, with no contact to the outside world. Make someone's day shine with a homemade Hanukkah card, let them know that we are thinking about them and wishing them a Happy Hanukkah.

This is a time sensitive project. Your cards need to be brought in by 12.13.2020 to ensure that we deliver the cards to our seniors before Hanukkah ends.

Day 3

Spread The Warmth

Benefiting Jewish Family Service's Safe Parking Program.

Now more than ever families are calling their car their home. The winter months are here, and although we live in San Diego, it still gets cold. Help us keep these families warm by donating a cozy blankets, warm jackets, fuzzy mittens, and hats.

Due to COVID, all donation items must be new.

Day 4

Load It, Gift It, Love It!

Benefiting Rady Children's Hospital.

With the holidays around the corner, what a better way than to show our little ones some love than with a gift card. Each year, Rady Children's Hospital makes sure that each of their "guests" receive a gift during the holiday season. Due to COVID, they are unable to accept toy donations this year, but they are accepting gift cards for Amazon, Target, Walmart, STEAM, ULTA or iTunes/Apple in $5, $10, or $15 denominations.

Day 5

They're Feelin' Beat, Give 'Em A Treat!

Benefiting the ICU & ER staff, Sharp Memorial Hospital.

While our families are home safe and sound there are the essential workers out there working harder than ever. The staff in the emergency rooms and ICUs have been hit the hardest, with longer hours, and more  shifts, and feeling beat, so why not provide them with a treat. When reaching out to a member who is on that team, their spouse wrote:

"I know there are days when my spouse leaves home at 5AM and doesn’t get home until 9PM and hasn’t had time to grab anything to eat during the day.  Having some snacks on hand would definitely be appreciated by all ER & ICU staff."

Day 6

Dress for Success

Benefiting San Diego's Drug Court Program.

The San Diego Drug Court program’s mission is to improve the lives of those who have been impacted by drug addiction (misdemeanor cases involving non-violent, drug-using offenders). Part of the program includes educational and vocational training opportunities so that when they graduate from this program they are ready to go into the work force. However, they still need to look the part. Look through your closet for some snazzy work clothes, it could be a nice tie or smart dress. Not only will they look the part for the job, they will also feel more confident walking into the interview.

Day 7

Soaps, Shampoos & Toothpaste, Oh My!

Benefiting Jewish Family Service's Safe Parking Program.

For our toiletry Drive we are accepting soap, shampoo, shaving cream, razors, toothbrushes and paste, lotions, hair brushes, etc.... All items must be new. They can be travel size or regular or travel size (maybe you have some from a hotel). All donations are greatly appreciated.

Day 8

Give From Your Heart

Benefiting Embrace A Family Program or a program that is special to you.

Every year, the Embrace-a-Family Program provides gifts and holiday cheer for individuals and families in need across San Diego County. From single-parent families, to military veterans, to older adults living on a tight fixed income, they make the holidays possible for those who might not otherwise be able to celebrate. Your support makes this special time of year a whole lot brighter. You can click here to make a donation.

However, we all have charities that are special to us in our own way. Whether it is the Embrace-A-Family program or another, consider making a donation today.
