You are invited to explore the beauty and meaning of some of the greatest works of Jewish poetry, from the renowned poets of medieval Spain including Yehudah HaLevi and Solomon Ibn Gabirol until the twentieth century. This is an opportunity to explore both secular poetry – including drinking songs and love songs – as well religious poetry reflecting deep spirituality. We will see how poets were influenced both by earlier Jewish tradition and the poetry of the non-Jewish world around them.
Poems will be examined with both Hebrew text and English translation. Knowledge of Hebrew is NOT necessary to appreciate and enjoy these great works of literature.
